GOING TO HELL IN A HANDBASKET
By David Truman at The Freedom and Heritage Society
Australia currently has the worst federal government since Federation. The rot is entrenched, but it set in over the decades before this, as the education system and public media were captured, and many of our institutions.
Ruinous immigration policy and the ideology of multiculturalism have hugely worsened our situation.
The present Albanese government is determined not to listen to the wishes of most people on a range of vital current issues. Key ones are the level and composition of Immigration; anti-Semitism and Islamic terrorism; and Energy policy – an economy-destroying disaster overseen by the possibly stupidest federal minister ever, Chris Bowen. This merits a separate post.
Defence unpreparedness is another really serious issue.
Immigration
Australia’s population is currently growing at 1.6% a year – the highest growth rate in the OECD. The Albanese government approved 568,000 migrant arrivals for 2024-25, despite very wide calls to end mass migration. Net Overseas Migration (NOM) is 306,000 — 1,556 people are arriving daily, of whom 838 stay permanently. That equates to an additional Geelong every year, or Ballarat plus Bendigo plus Launceston. Where are they going to live? There’s a projected housing shortfall of 262,000 homes by 2029! Have you noticed the number of tents in public parks?
House prices have skyrocketed in the past three years, while wages have not. The trend is continuing apace. The Australian reported on 5 January 2026 these extraordinary figures for housing prices in our six state capitals at November 2025: growth over the year to November 2025, the median home value in November 2025, and the forecast for growth in 2026.
This writer is a home owner, but what hope do young people have to buy their first home now? And how can they save when rents over the past year rose by over 7 per cent in Brisbane, 6 per cent in Perth, and 11 per cent in Hobart, and the rental market now has a national vacancy rate of just 1.2%? What are the longer term social implications of this? How many young people are simply going to stop believing in this country?
Then there’s the growth of ethnic, religious and political ghettos, courtesy of the ideology of multiculturalism and endless tolerance of practices and values that are alien and hostile. Hate preachers spew venom against not only Jews but all of us non-Muslims in an ever increasing number of mosques. This hate of everyone and everything not Islamic is a core part of Islamic doctrine.
And Islam especially hates the Jews – ever since Mohammed took violent exception to the refusal of the Jews of Medina to accept him as a prophet. That was some 1400 years ago, yet current sermons from the radical imams still include description of Jews as bloodthirsty monsters, denial of the Hamas massacre, and calls for jihad.
Bollards everywhere in our central city areas are an attempt to prevent drive-in violence by Islamic fanatics – who else?
In all airports worldwide, we are subjected to time-consuming and expensive security procedures – thanks to Islam exclusively.
In Australia, we’ve had the inconvenience of removal of rubbish bins from many public areas (such as bus stations) in an attempt to reduce scope for bomb placing.
THE MUSLIM VOTE
Muslims vote overwhelmingly Labor, and increasing dependence of Labor politicians on Muslim votes has led them into treasonous behaviour, especially denial that “Islam” is the cause of many social problems.
The Albanese government has allowed in several thousand refugees from Gaza without meaningful vetting, although this is certainly increasing the number of anti-Semites. No other Western country has gone that far. And of course, Muslim countries won’t touch them!
Even worse, if possible, the government has enabled the repatriation of a number of ISIS brides – people who spat in the face of this country by identifying themselves with the proposed global Islamic caliphate. That is not compassion, it’s treason.
Naturally the ALP has preselected Muslims as candidates in some seats, including the now rogue Senator Fatima Payman from Western Australia who, after quitting the Labor Party, had the stupid audacity to found a party called “Australia’s Voice” as a front for the Muslim agenda! The Greens have also got the appalling Senator Mehreen Faruqi, whose heart has never left Pakistan.
Both Muslim immigration and the growth of Marxist ideology pushed by the left-captured universities and schools have led to an unprecedented loss of social cohesion in Australia. We see demonstrations in our streets for causes alien to our country – Marxism and Islam, dressed up as compassion for the Palestinians against “Israeli genocide.”
With extraordinary hypocrisy, some Muslims are dressing themselves in Aboriginal flags – in blithe denial of Islam’s record over centuries of extinguishing other civilizations. Only FOOLS are taken in by this. Its real purpose is cultural pessimism – a tactic out of Cultural Marxism, a desire to destroy our civilization.
Then there’s the ABC’s Laura Tingle and the appalling Sarah Ferguson (of the Trump Russiagate hoax), who both denied any link between “religion” and the Bondi massacre. These two women are appalling specimens that any decent future government would sack.
Naturally, ABC top management supported them – yet another reason why the ABC should lose all public funding, except for its rural and emergency functions.
Another bane from immigration is the appearance not only of Middle East crime gangs, but of Somali and Sudanese gangs, especially in Melbourne. We are seeing too many instances of machete violence.
Acceptance of people from many other countries has created some wonderful success stories in Australia, for example the Vietnamese community, who generally are hard working and aspirational. Not so some other groups. Multiculturalism as an ideology – as distinct from just multiethnicity – is destroying Australia. It is the cultural equivalent of AIDS. To repeat what has been said of the tragedy of Britain, if you import the third world, you become the third world. Australia’s importation of large numbers of Muslims and Africans has been a disaster.
Three Issues in Immigration
There are three separate issues in immigration: total numbers; where they go (far too many to just Melbourne and Sydney, whose infrastructure and housing markets are not coping); and most importantly – the cultural baggage they bring with them. We need to be far stricter in vetting applicants for their ability and willingness to assimilate, accept Australian values and BECOME AUSTRALIANS. The test on Australian Values needs to be beefed up very substantially.

Neglect of Defence
A further quite different issue is that both sides of politics, but especially Labor have neglected our defence preparedness. The world has enjoyed eighty years without a global conflagration, but the rise of China particularly, and the seeming determination of leadership of the EU and Britain to incite a war with Russia – appalling madness! – makes the current situation more dangerous than at any time since the Cuban missile crisis of October 1962. Australia is in no position to deal with a major crisis affecting our region. We are presently no better able to deal with a war emergency than we have been to deal with violent terrorism and insidious infiltration from Islam – both issues have been handled with colossal complacency.
The risk of war between China and Taiwan is growing fast – and if it happens, Australia would almost certainly be pulled in. Our military, ports, bases and intelligence systems are all deeply tied to America’s. The feckless Albanese government appears to have passed on the need to take back the very strategically located port of Darwin from Chinese ownership – too afraid to annoy the dragon?
Australia is very vulnerable to cyberattacks. 99 per cent of our internet traffic travels through just 15 undersea cables. If an enemy cut these, we would be digitally isolated.
Fuel supplies are a great weakness. Way back in the 1980s Canberra looked at developing a long term oil stocks policy, but jibbed at the cost. Over the past decade, global energy giants like BP and Shell have either divested or closed their Australian refineries, especially because Singapore refineries had greater economies of scale. We used to have oil refineries in Sydney, Kwinana (WA) and Port Stanvac (Adelaide), but today only two refineries remain – Ampol Lytton (Brisbane) and Viva Geelong. Ninety per cent of our fuel supplies come through the South China Sea, and we only store enough for 60 days. Notional access to stocks held in the United States is a joke in the context of any military emergency.
Major defence projects underway including AUKUS nuclear submarines, new frigates, cruise missiles and underwater drones are still years from completion. We are dangerously exposed! We need to beef up defence capability very substantially, and quickly. And to pay for this, our government needs to stop wasting money on woke rubbish and duplication of state functions.
